“In general, you should have your eyes open for subject matters. Look for a scene, try to frame it and click your imaginary shutter.”
My grandfather, Denes Istvanffy, was also a photographer and a huge inspiration on how I take pictures. This is one of the many pieces of advice I received from him. In college, I would send him my assignments and he would send me pages of critiques back, it helped my hone my own eye for photography. Along with Imogen Cunningham, Edward Weston and Sam Abell being great influences on how I see images today, my grandfather taught me to see and trust in my camera, finding beauty in simplicity.
Being born and raised in Pacifica, CA, I was always creating and having the ocean and beautiful parks just outside my door was great inspiration. I started my pursuit of photography while attending Terra Nova High School, when I received my Canon EMF SLR, one of cameras I use still today. While at Skyline Community College, I knew this was what I was meant to do; take pictures and capture simplicity. With the mentoring of some amazing teachers, I enhanced my eye and grew into a stronger photographer.
After graduation, with an AA Degree in Arts, I went into retail, starting in Visual/Display and then on to management. It was a slight departure from my camera, but it helped to sharpen my skills. Always the photographer, I left retail in 2003 to pursue a new job that allowed to me to start my own business. What began as a part time position with a fellow artist in San Francisco grew into Daniele Derenzi Photography. Then in 2004, I expanded the business to include; “A Little Sparkle”, personalized ornaments and hand-painted, freehand designed glass ornaments and greeting cards, selling at art festivals and small boutiques.
From driving to work, walking in the mountains or simply being with friends, I always think how would I photograph this?
